Cross‐Shock Electrostatic Potentials at Mars Inferred From MAVEN Measurements

چکیده

Abstract A bow shock is generated by the interaction of solar wind with planetary global dipole field (e.g., Earth), or (mainly) ionosphere Mars). The cross‐shock potential has been well studied at Earth but not yet for Mars. We infer and approximate peak in frame invariant de Hoffmann‐Teller profile Mars ( ϕ ) data from Atmospheric Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission. find that its ratio to ram ion energy E vary similarly against zenith angle (SZA, a proxy between flow normal) magnetic latitudes. Our results also reveal no significant dependence on parameters such as upstream interplanetary (IMF) normal plasma beta wind. There somewhat positive correlation magnetosonic Mach number amplification across shock. cycle effect location, closer planet near minimum, expected. Lastly, similarities differences potentials are discussed. Characterizing electron energization high‐altitude loss influenced thereby work here.

Implications of MAVEN Mars Near-Wake Measurements and Models

Mars is typically viewed as a member of the category of weakly magnetized planets, with a largely induced magnetosphere and magnetotail produced by the draped fields of the solar wind interaction. However, selected MAVEN suprathermal electron and magnetic field observations in the near wake, sampled along its elliptical orbit during the early prime mission at altitudes ranging from its ~150 km ...

MAVEN insights into oxygen pickup ions at Mars

Since Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN)’s arrival at Mars on 21 September 2014, the SEP (Solar Energetic Particle) instrument on board the MAVEN spacecraft has been detecting oxygen pickup ions with energies of a few tens of keV up to ~200 keV. These ions are created in the distant upstream part of the hot atomic oxygen exosphere of Mars, via photoionization, charge exchange with s...

Ionospheric plasma density variations observed at Mars by MAVEN/LPW

We report on initial observations made by the Langmuir Probe and Waves relaxation sounding experiment on board the NASA Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission. These measurements yield the ionospheric thermal plasma density, and we use these data here for an initial survey of its variability. Studying orbit-to-orbit variations, we show that the relative variability of the ionosp...

Initial results from the MAVEN mission to Mars

The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) Mars orbiter has been gathering information on the Mars upper atmosphere, ionosphere, and solar and solar wind interactions since its orbit insertion in September 2014. MAVEN’s science goals are to understand processes driving the escape of atmospheric gases to space at the present epoch, and their variations with solar and local heliospheric c...

Electrostatic Potentials at Solid/Liquid Interfaces*

This review deals with electrostatic potentials within solid/electrolyte interfaces. The electrostatic potentials of several planes are defined and discussed: the inner surface potential affecting the state of charged surface species due to interactions with potential determining ions (Ψ0), the potential affecting the state of associated counterions (Ψβ), the potential at the onset of diffuse l...
